Dates, not advice. Your plan administrator's notice and plan documents control. Calendar days; weekends do not extend these windows. US federal rules only - Canada and UK: see the layoff packet.

How the dates are counted

  • "60 days after" a date means that date plus 60 calendar days.
  • Weekends and holidays do not extend COBRA, Marketplace or plan windows. Only federal tax-return due dates move to the next business day (26 U.S.C. 7503), which is why a loan-offset rollover can land on April 16, 17 or 18.
  • A provisional date depends on something that has not happened yet - usually your COBRA notice arriving. Enter the real date when you have it and the timeline updates.
  • Set by law dates come from federal statute or regulation. Typical timing is good practice, not a legal deadline. Check your plan documents means your plan sets the real date.

Deadline questions

How long do I have to elect COBRA?
At least 60 days, counted from the later of the day your coverage ends or the day your election notice is provided (29 U.S.C. 1165). Your employer has 30 days to tell the plan administrator, and the administrator then has 14 days to send the notice - so the election deadline can fall more than three months after your last day. If you elect and pay on time, coverage can be retroactive to the day it ended.
Can I switch from COBRA to a Marketplace plan later?
Only within 60 days of losing job-based coverage, or at Open Enrollment. Voluntarily dropping COBRA, or stopping payments, does not open a new Special Enrollment Period. Running out of COBRA at the end of its maximum period does. Medicaid and CHIP accept applications any time of year.
What happens to my 401(k) loan when I leave?
Many plans make the unpaid balance due and, if it is not repaid, offset it against your account. An offset caused by leaving your job within 12 months of separation is a qualified plan loan offset: you can avoid tax on it by rolling over an equal amount to an IRA or new plan by your tax-return due date for that year, including extensions. Other distributions paid to you have the normal 60-day rollover window.
Does this tool store my dates?
No. The dates live only in the page address, and the calendar download is built on the fly. Nothing is saved unless you are signed in and choose to save the dates to your deadlines, where you can dismiss them at any time.
